SHC stays power tariff hike

Fav Tag:

GEO 436 KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) has issued the stay order against the recent hike in electricity tariff and directed the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) and National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) to file a statement by June 23 showing the reasons behind the increase. The court passed the order while hearing identical petitions against privatisation of the KESC and the increase in power tariff. The petitioner the Law Foundation submitted that the increase made in power tariff to the KESC by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) was on the basis of misrepresentation and without evaluation and increase in tariff within the present framework was illegal. Javed Siqqiqui contended that the KESC generates only 1000 MW through its own resources and buys another 1000 MW from other sources but receives fuel adjustment surcharges on the whole while this cost is not paid to electricity bought from Wapda. The government provides subsidy to KESC and up to now an amount of Rs 36 billion has been accumulated which is to be paid by the government to the power utility, and benefit of this subsidy was not shifted to the masses, he told the court.
