KARACHI: As citizens welcomed Ramazan they also faced the burden of a hike in the prices in food items, sugar price has again risen by 2.50 paisas per kg, mounting the new price at Rs. 68 per kg, said sources on Monday.

The profiteers, in the first week of Ramazan, added the miseries of domestic consumer by raising the sugar price by 2.50 paisas per kg.

The sugar sack of 50 kg is being sold at Rs. 400 while the sack of 100 kg is available at Rs. 6,800.

Earlier, sugar was being sold at Rs. 77 in the retail market despite the government rate of Rs 65. In utility stores, the price of sugar was Rs. 55, while in Ramazan bazaars the district government had fixed the price of sugar at Rs. 61.

According to sources however, Ramazan bazaar stallholders had rejected the government’s price of Rs. 61. The government had decided to provide sugar to wholesale dealers at Rs. 56 while it would be available to retail sellers at Rs. 59, who would then sell the commodity at Rs. 61 per kg. The retailers had refused to sell sugar at Rs. 61 because they would be getting it for Rs. 59 and Rs. 2 profit was not acceptable to them, considering the transportation and packing charges
