GEO 436 MADRID: Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged the world community Tuesday to support a deal under which Iran will ship much of its low enriched uranium to Turkey. “I urge the international community to support the final declaration for the sake of world peace,” Erdogan told a press conference in Madrid. “There is a unique chance before us and I believe we should take this chance.” The foreign ministers of Iran, Turkey and Brazil on Monday signed an agreement that commits Tehran to depositing 1,200 kilograms (2,640 pounds) of low enriched uranium (LEU) in Turkey in return for fuel for a research reactor. Most Western powers have been sceptical of the deal, which was spearheaded by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in a last-ditch effort to avoid a new round of UN sanctions against Iran. The deal will have a “very important impact on the establishment of world peace in the future,” Erdogan said. But he criticised those who had expressed reservations about the deal, saying they “are not ones living in the region” and faced with the threat of nuclear weapons. “Through diplomacy and negotiations. Iran can sit around the table,” he said.
