Investigations are underway into the incident. A construction accident in Manila’s business district has killed 10 workers on Thursday. Eight workers were on the platform to install glass panels on the 28th floor when it fell, and they plummeted all the way to the seventh floor. The platform fell on three other workers, killing two of them. [Junjun Binay, Makati Mayor]: “What I saw was that there were three people still hanging on the wire mesh on the scaffolding.” One construction worker survived the fall, suffering some fractures… now being treated at the hospital. Officials have called for an investigation, but defended the area’s safety record. [Junjun Binay, Makati Mayor]: “I would like to say it’s an isolated incident for the city. For many years now accidents have been very low for the city. And even deaths as recorded by our engineer’s office, even injuries, are very low for the city. There’s a high standard actually for construction safety.” Construction workers in the Philippines are minimum wage earners and often work under hazardous conditions.
