Mfarhanonline News England 214 (48 ov)
Australia 215/6 (46.0 ov)
Australia won by 4 wickets (with 24 balls remaining)
Paul Collingwood struck two vital blows to give England hope of defending their under-par total at the SCG. He removed Cameron White and Brad Haddin in his first two overs to leave Australia 5 for 114 after Haddin had been guiding the chase with an impressive 54. England’s main three quicks had also made breakthroughs as the match continued to be dominated by the bowlers. England were given an early boost when Chris Tremlett removed Shane Watson in his first over. Watson had already escaped a close call when an inside edge scooted past the stumps and then playing an expansive drive he didn’t make any contact. The bowlers were clearly pumped up after the team’s poor batting show, but Haddin responded with sweet drives. Shaun Marsh had been promoted to No. 3 after his 110 at Hobart and was brought back down to earth when he fell lbw against Ajmal Shahzad. From the non-striker’s end Haddin immediately said it was worth a review but the pictures confirmed it was stone dead. It was fast-paced action as England hunted wickets and Haddin continued to play his shots including a six over cover off Tremlett. However, there was no sign in a upturn in Michael Clarke’s form as he fell for 9 when he chipped Chris Woakes’ third ball in ODI cricket to midwicket, where Michael Yardy juggled the catch three times. Woakes was impressive on his debut as he maintained a tight line despite the batsmen’s attempts to get after him. Then came what appeared a huge moment in the game when Haddin, on 37, drove Luke Wright in the air towards mid-off, but Tremlett couldn’t hold a catch low to his left which would have left Australia 4 for 68. Haddin moved to a run-a-ball fifty with a beautiful cover drive against Yardy bef! ore Coll ingwood made his impact. After failing again with the bat he trapped White lbw with his second ball – and Australia used up their last review – then an over later Haddin tried to clear the straight boundary only to pick out long-on. And, just to spice things up further, there were some dark clouds heading towards the SCG.
