Zardari for scientific study of glaciers’ movement in GB

GEO 436 ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari Tuesday said that the glaciers in Gilgit-Baltistan area were also vast reservoirs of water and their movement needs to be studied scientifically for a better understanding of the water and environmental issues. He was talking to Agostino Da Ploenza, a renowned mountaineer and President K-2 Committee, who called on him here at the Aiwan-e-Sadr on Tuesday along with the Italian Ambassador in Islamabad. The K-2 Committee in Italy headed by Ploenza is a scientific project for carrying out research on glaciers movement in Himalaya, Karakorum and HinduKash. Spokesperson to the President former Senator Farhatullah Babar said that the President while talking to Ploenza appreciated the scientific research project carried out by the K-2 committee in Gilgit-Baltistan. The President said that the government is focussing on development and uplift of the people of Gilgit-Baltistan and welcomed private initiatives in this regard. The President said that he would recommend to the Government to consider setting up a political committee to examine issues in water, environment and energy in Gilgit-Baltistan to suggest measures for optimal utilization of the areas' natural resources. He said that the K-2 Committee of Italy could play an important role in this regard. Referring to Pak-Italy bilateral relations, President Zardari said that Pakistan looks forward to the visit of the Italian prime minister to Pakistan in the near future that would boost Pak-Italy long-standing friendship and bilateral cooperation. The President said that Pakistan offers unique opportunities and has promising potential for investment in agriculture, energy, textiles, marble and gemstones, fashion design, automobile, railways, IT sector and tourism. The President urged for further enhancing the Pak-Italy bilateral cooperation in all fields, particularly trade and economic sectors. Agostino Da Ploenza appreciated the President's interests in glaciers studies in Gilgit-Baltistan.
