Mfarhanonline Social Media News: SoundCloud, an audio platform that lets people record and share their music, announced today that it will be expanding into North America, with a new base in San Francisco. The company, which launched in Berlin in 2008, currently has offices in both its birth city and London. It plans to open operations in Silicon Valley to better engage with companies interested in using its API — which has already spawned more than 120 apps (available in SoundCloud’s app gallery ). "Our move to San Francisco is reminiscent of when my co-founder, Eric Wahlforss, and I first launched SoundCloud,” says Alexander Ljung, founder and CEO of SoundCloud. “Then it was the two of us working out of a cafe in the Mitte district of Berlin and sleeping on friends’ floors. We still very much maintain that start-up ethos and are starting our U.S. venture based out of The Summit cafe." SoundCloud, a favorite among musicians, recently announced that it had received $10 million in funding in a round led by Union Square Ventures and Index Ventures, which, in part, is facilitating this expansion. The company is also hiring in San Francisco. According to the company, it currently has 2.8 million registered users. SoundCloud seems to be on the up and up of late, rolling out a newly updated iPhone app with a “Record” capability, as well as new apps for Android and the Mac App Store . We’re interested to see what else the company has up its proverbial sleeve when it touches down in San Francisco.
