Despite government assurances and police action, extortion crime is still on the rise in the city.
In a recent incident, suspects opened fire at butcher’s shop in Gol Market over refusal to pay extortion, injuring Zubair, the shop owner.
Locals gathered at the scene and blocked the main road while demanding immediate action against the extortionists.
On Saturday, a complete shutter-down strike was observed in Karachi and other urban centres of Sindh in a protest against the extortion mafia.
More than 300 markets, main business houses and commercial centres across the city remained closed.
Entire business community, industrialists, transporters and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) supported the extortion-stricken traders to send a strong warning to the elements trying to jeopardise business activities in the economic and commercial hub of the country.
