Mfarhanonline:Hollywood: SOPAâs DNS Blocking âOff The Tableâ

Mfarhanonline Social Media News: The Motion Picture Association of America ( MPAA ), Hollywood’s lobbying group, has been one of the strongest supporters of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act. Both of those bills were originally designed to block or re-route DNS (Domain Name Service) requests for sites considered to be illegally hosting copyright-protected content. But the DNS provisions have now been struck from both bills — and the MPAA is apparently not trying to get them back. “DNS filtering is really off the table,” said MPAA tech policy chief Paul Brigner said, according to Ars Technica. Brigner made the comment Tuesday during the State of the Net conference. That conference is sponsored by the Congressional Internet Caucus Advisory Committee and the Internet Education Foundation with the goal of allowing lawmakers, the press and the public to discuss Internet and technology issues. Opponents of SOPA and PIPA have long considered the bills’ DNS-filtering provisions to be especially problematic. DNS works as a sort of “phone book” for the internet. When a user types a URL into a browser, DNS helps the users’ computer find and speak with the correct server hosting the content that the user wants to access. Brigner acknowledged that the online world is changing the way Hollywood does business. “The future of our industry relies on the Internet,” he said. In an earlier response to the White House’s anti-SOPA blog post , the MPAA said it sees no conflict between free speech, innovation and protecting intellectual property on the Internet. However, the MPAA isn’t giving up on its quest for new tools to fight digital piracy. “We need more than just following the money and addressing search results,” said Brigner, suggesting that, if SOPA/PIPA should fail, ! the MPAA will continue to lobby for similar legislation in the future. What do you think of the MPAA’s abandonment of DNS provisions in SOPA/PIPA? Let us know in the comments.
